Mia loves horseback riding, loves taking photographs of nature and still life, and doing make up. Mia loves spending time with her mom and poodle, Harper, taking Harper to the dog park. “I love watching scary movies with friends and eating food. Even though I don’t look it, I can eat more than my dad! Especially steak!”

Mia has big plans and dreams for college and beyond for her life. “After I graduate I really hope to go to Berea College in Kentucky. I want to study in nursing and psychology.” After college she wants to work as a psychiatric nurse that works inpatient with teens that are going through depression, anxiety or trauma.

When asked where she sees herself in 5 years, Mia shares that she will still be a college student but independent. She knows it won’t be easy, but the good days will make the tough days of college worth it.

Although Mia is excited to spread her wings, she will miss all the amazing people she has met throughout the years in high school. She has had the influence of amazing teachers that have helped to mold her into being the best she can while pushing her towards her goals.

After college Mia has plenty of dreams. “Since I want to be a psychiatric nurse, my one true accomplishment would be to know that I saved someone’s life and turned their life around. I’d love to someday live in an old house with no debt to my name. I want to go to Italy with my dad, because he was stationed there while he was in the navy and lived there for 4 years.”

Mia is looking forward to all the college tours this upcoming year. She also is excited for the opportunity to make her senior year her best year yet. “I’ve had a couple hard years in the past but I have made it through the storm and I am so thankful for everyone that has stood by my side. I love the self-confidence I have and the love I have for life. You have to live everyday as if there is no tomorrow. So I make sure to tell everyone I love them and that I do what makes ME happy.”

Little Miami High School Class of 2020, Upcoming Senior Cody Anderson

The next upcoming Senior I would like to introduce you to is Cody Anderson. Cody attends Little Miami High School. He is a part of the wrestling team. Cody seemed a little shy when I first met him, but as we began working together he became a natural in front of the camera.

When Cody isn’t in class or on the wrestling mats you may find him working at Gold Star, spending time with his family or attending concerts. “I am really into music,” Cody shares. “The first concert I ever went to was to see Kiss with my dad and we have seen them 3 times together.”

Cody plans to attend college for either education or business. His 5-year plan is to graduate from college and begin working in his field choice.

Although Cody says he will miss his friends most once his senior year of High School is over, he is looking forward to becoming an adult and venturing out into the world. Two of his bucket list goals that he wants to hit is to go sky diving and to snorkel in the Caribbean.

Cincinnati Cake Smashes - Unicorns

Remember When Portraits is so excited to share one of our 2019 goals with you. Our goal is to bring you 10 themed cake smashes that we have never done before to show you what we are capable of doing. We plan to be doing model calls throughout the year looking for 11-13 month olds, boy and girls, when we are ready for that next set up. You can find our model calls on our community group on Facebook under Remember When Portraits.

I have to tell you though, I have a love/love more relationship with cake smashes. By far these are my FAVORITE sessions when little ones are involved. You get to see and document them enjoying the glory of all calories at an age where they are learning about everything. You get to see them enjoy or dislike immensely the texture, taste, smell and look of the food product put in front of them. They get to take in the sights, get messy and enjoy foods they have mostly been told they aren’t allowed to partake in. It is kind of glorious and special to be the photographer to share this moment with these little ones and their parents.

On the love more side, you have to know how much preparation can go into these sessions. Our studio coordinates the ordering of the cake, including discussing design and color. Color is actually really important to get right as if the cake doesn’t match the outfit or the backdrop this creates a LOT of work in photoshop for us. We are talking it could be hours of time we simply won’t get back because we didn’t communicate the design from the get go. Planning all these little details and allowing our creative juices to flow is what I love most.

We spend at minimum an hour prior to your arrival decorating the set. This includes any items needing to be shopped for like fresh veggies and bread for our spaghetti smash, wrapping of presents or decorating boxes to fit that Mario Bros. theme behind your child or creating snowflakes and white paper garland for that Buddy the Elf set up, and even making the balloon garland by hand. We also work with our clients to select and order your child’s costume or outfit for the shoot. We make sure we hit the budget and get everything delivered or picked up on time. It all takes time and time is valuable. That is why we offer 2 different cake smash packages: one that is simple that we can whip up the hour before you arrive or the turn key session where we do it all for you, spending hours coordinating, designing and planning every last detail where the only thing you have to do is show up with a well rested little one!

If you are interested in scheduling a cake smash or food smash session for your little one, contact us at april@rememberwhenportraits.com and let us know what you had in mind! Here is one we did last week. We partnered with Stephanie’s Cupcake Company in Maineville, Ohio for the gorgeous unicorn cake that our little model tore into with ease. I mean can you blame her?

Ugly Sweaters for Christmas

It is funny how fashion changes over time. We can reminisce about how a style comes from a certain decade invoking certain memories or how we pray another never comes back into style ever again.

Because history tends to repeat itself, it is not a surprise that those 1980’s sweaters we were all forced to wear still are in style today. Well, in a different purpose anyways. Every Christmas season those old sweaters emerge from the back of our closets to be worn as ugly Christmas sweaters once again.

Thankfully over the years the designs of sweaters have become more holiday festive and even more fun to wear. From bands having their logos embroidered on them to funny quotes to homemade sweaters to even animals wearing sweaters, the options are endless! Even now people host parties simply to see who wears the ugliest sweater. Thankfully we aren’t all dressing like Carlton from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air daily anymore!

No Shave November

Welcome to No-Shave November! The month where the weather grows cold, we all bundle up more and the razor meeting the skin gets postponed for a while. But why? What is so special about November? Is it to keep us warmer and protected on those cold, blistering days? Or is it to accept the challenge of bringing awareness to cancer? Let’s learn more.

Ryan Stout Letters & Grain Remember When Portraits No-Shave November

“The goal of No-Shave November is to grow awareness by embracing our hair, which many cancer patients lose, and letting it grow wild and free. Donate the money you typically spend on shaving and grooming to educate about cancer prevention, save lives and aid those fighting the battle.” - Quote from the No-Shave.org website.

The No-Shave November non-profit started in Chicago in 2009 by the children of Matthew Hill after he passed away from colon cancer. The No-Shave November organization has raised over $2 million to date through donations and by selling bracelets and t-shirts online. One of the differences between Movenber, which was started in the UK, and No-Shave November is that women can participate in the No-Shave November movement as can beards. It isn’t only for the mustache wearers of the world!

Cake Smashes and More

This past weekend we tried something new: cake smashes!  The shoots with the kids went amazingly well—we were able to see four small clients enjoy making a huge mess!  A few of the shoots were traditional ‘first birthday’ set-ups, but we had one two year old in attendance, proving that age doesn’t matter when it comes to eating cake and having fun.

Remember When Portraits cake smashes

As the weekend moved along our participants got braver and braver.  The first session started with what we’d call a taste-test, and the final session was a cake-explosion!  It was almost sad to see the beautiful creations of Stephanie’s Cupcake Co. get smashed to smithereens… almost. :)

The cake smashes were so much fun that we’ve decided to add them to our line up with three radical packages!

Krazy Kitten Krafts provided us with banners for each shoot, dialing up the level of decorations from fun to fantastic!  With the purchase of one of the larger packages, one of those banners will be yours for the designing and taking.  How awesome is that??

Daydreamer Turned Storyteller

Cincinnati Children Photographer Dress Up

Once upon a time there once was a little girl who dreamed to live like a princess. She wanted to wear beautiful gowns, satin laced slippers, a dab of make up to accentuate her natural beauty and a crown on top of her head to signify royalty.

Cincinnati Children Photography Dress Up

She envisioned moments of dancing like a proper princess; beautiful classic music playing in the background, surrounded by tall walls filled with windows overseeing rolling lawns and beautiful gardens as far as your eyes could see until they kissed the horizon afar.

Cincinnati Photographer Children Dress Up

The older the little girl got, the less she dreamed dreams similar to what she would read in her fairytale books. She began to lose the childhood spark that allowed her to get lost in her own imagination pretending to be anyone she wished she could be as she matured and grew older each year. Eventually one day that spark wilted out just like a candle at the bottom of its wick.

Cincinnati Photography Children Girls Dress Up

After many years of living in a cold and cruel world, facing many sad realities, that little girl began to remember and long for her innocent childhood dreams. The ones that made her feel alive, taking her to new places that were safe to explore and to experience, while simply being lost in her own imagination. The wonderful little girl realized that although she was no longer a child free to daydream anytime she wished to, she was able to control her own destiny and very capable of bringing her childhood dreams to life.

Cincinnati Womens Glamour Photography

She realized she herself had become a story teller through her craft just like the authors of all the many books she read and built her dreams around. Because of her craft she was able to allow other little girls, who were still in those innocent years, and even those little girls trapped inside adult bodies, to experience their own princess dreams! Hence the birth of Girls Dress Up Sessions and Women's Before & After Sessions!

Sugar and Spice in the Fall

Don't you just love the season of fall??? It is by far one of my favorite times a year. The scenery changes giving us beautiful colors, the temperature gets a little cooler and we begin to bring out those long sleeves and sweaters. We also get some of the most gorgeous sunsets that Mother Nature can provide in those golden hours that are dwindling down before winter.

Cincinnati Family Photographer

Earlier this month I was honored to photograph the Wilson family from Louisville, KY. They made the drive leaving as the sun came up just to have me photograph their beautiful, little family. I was forewarned Miss Lor was more spice than sugar and just to get any photos of her even looking at the camera would be considered a win. I knew the cards might be stacked against me, but I am also not your typical, everyday photographer. You see what many people may not realize is I am a mother of 3 with two of my kiddos have different disabilities. I also have over 7 years of experience working with children on a day to day basis. There isn't much a small child can throw at me that I haven't already figured out! Needless to say when I was given the challenge, I confidently accepted it!

Cincinnati Kid Photographer

Mis Lor was not exactly "in the mood" to talk with me at first just like most kids. I was a stranger and was holding something she didn't recognize. I broke the ice with her by playing peek-a-boo around the camera which got her to play along with me. She finally gelled with me within 10 minutes when I showed her how my camera worked and explained about my cool frog that hides in the lens. Then we went frog hunting near the pond and found some live ones! I had her hooked!

Cincinnati Family Photographer 1

For the rest of the session we played games of hide and seek. She swung and did tickle wars with her mom and dad, made faces, threw her head back and covered her eyes in moments that could not be timed any more perfectly. She was simply her perfect little self which is all anyone could ever ask for!

Cincinnati Family Photographer 2

Her mom had this to share on our Facebook page: "Thank you April Sova for these amazing photographs. We traveled To Cincinnati for them and it was a worth every mile with a grumpy toddler. Thanks Remember When Portraits LLC!" For the record, Miss Lor wasn't grumpy at all. She was merely living up to all the sugar and spice that she has been given in her little life. I loved working with her and her family to capture the photographs they were wanting. Remember, it isn't always about capturing what you think will be the perfect photo, but instead capturing the moment perfectly!

Here is a quick video ad we made out of their session. I hope you enjoy it!

Save the Date October 13, 2018

A few weeks ago at a hidden gem of a park nearby, I met a sweet young girl who is planning to be married next year. Her soon-to-be-husband stood as her protector, her rock and the love of her life. Their names are Kaytlynn and Brian.

Cincinnati Photographer Engagement Session

The engagement session was a gift from her mom. The joy exuding from her mother on being able to watch and enjoy this journey with her daughter and soon-to-be son-in-law was simply enough to melt your heart. The kids were in tow as everyone in the family was so excited by this upcoming transition in Kaytlynn and Brian's life.

Cincinnati Engagement Photography Ring

Through the next hour as we wandered through the woods and trails finding beautiful scenery to place in the backdrop, I found myself in awe of their young love. The hand holding, the smiles, the genuine kisses and whispers of secrets to help me capture for them the look that they wanted in their engagement images - it was all so magical to be a part of. Even though I am merely the story teller at that moment in time, I am ever so grateful and thankful for my own talents and treasures to be able to witness the love these two share for one another.

Cincinnati Photography Engagement Session

My favorite photo of them out of them all was the piggy back ride image. It encapsulated every word I have written in the last two paragraphs - all boiled into one image. That's right. One image. Congratulations to you both on the upcoming wedding. Just know the best part is the "happily ever after"!

Check out the video from their session below
